Criminal Activity Warning

Chief Barrett would like to remind the residents of Central Lake of various telephone and e-mail scams which are becoming more common in our area. Many complaints from this activity involve residents who have been offered money. Many of these scams ask for financial information, including social security numbers, bank account numbers, and credit card information. Some scams may promise large amounts of money in exchange for a small processing or handling fee. The Central Lake Police Department asks that residents not give out personal or financial information over the telephone or via e-mail.

Many of these telemarketers gather this information for identity theft and to obtain money from accounts. If you think you may have doubts about your account you are asked to call your credit card company or bank to verify that no illegal activity has taken place.

You can register your home, business, or cellular phone numbers at the National Do Not Call Registry at www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222.
